Role of the Board

The Board of Education is established by the Constitution of the State of Iowa and the statutes enacted by the Iowa General Assembly.

The Board sets policy and provides general direction for the school district in accordance with the laws of Iowa, policies and regulations of the District and the expressed will of the community.

The Board of Education has seven members who are each elected for a term of three years (or complete an unexpired term of a regularly elected member).  Four members shall be elected from director districts and three shall be elected at large.

Regular Board meetings are held at 6:00 p.m. in the Board Room at the Education Service Center, 1516 Washington Street, Waterloo, on the second and fourth Monday of each month during the school year and usually once a month in June and July.  The meetings in June and July begin at 5:00 p.m.

Board meetings, including discussions and actions, are generally conducted in open session. The Board only convenes in Closed Session, as provided by the Iowa Open Meetings Law, to discuss such things as personnel evaluations, litigation, real estate purchases, and student expulsions. Notices of Board meetings are provided to the public through posting at the Education Service Center, 1516 Washington Street, Waterloo, and through announcements to the local media. Agendas for meetings are posted on this Web site on the Friday prior to each Monday Board meeting.  The meetings are rebroadcast on Channel 19 the first Tuesday after the meeting at 9am, 1pm, 6pm, and 9pm.  The meeting will also air the first Wednesday after the meeting at 1am and 6am.  To find a complete list of shows running on Channel 19, click here.
