Three Qualify for State NHD Competition!

Elizabeth Storey, Ajla Dizdarevice and Hannah Smith qualified to compete in the National History Day state level competition, the first to do so for a Waterloo school. NHD projects require extensive research and knowledge of the topic of the student’s choice. Storey and Dizdarevice chose to present their research through the use of a display board while Smith chose to dramatize her subject – Margaret Thatcher. All participants are interviewed extensively by judges to asses their familiarity with there topics.

Three students from Central have qualified for the state competition for Nation History Day. Hannah Smith, Ajla Dizdarevic, and Elizabeth Story will be competing at the state level for a chance to go on to the national competition.

Student builds Working Tesla Coil

Central 8th grader Nathan Schmidt has always been interested in science and has envisioned a career as an engineer. His insatiable curiosity to discover how things work has led him to a most unusual hobby – researching and building his own Tesla Coil.

Although the building portion of Nathan’s project took the last 3-6 months, his research started when he was a sixth grader. As a helper in the library he often spoke about his ideas – the Tesla coil being just one of them. On April 16, Nathan had the opportunity to display and demonstrate his work in the library. Many students who do not already know Nathan were surprised he is “one of us”. As one student put it “this science stuff is where it is at”.

Congratulations to Nathan for realizing a dream through hard work, perseverance and determination!

Blind Date with a Book!

Hey students! Would you like a chance to win a made-to-order heart-shaped pizza for lunch on Valentines Day? If so, sign up for “Blind Date with a Book” at the circulation desk or email Ms. Hartwig at hartwigm@waterlooschools.org. Students will choose a wrapped book so they have no idea what they are getting – it will be a sweet surprise. Once the book is read they will complete a “rate your date” and be entered into a drawing for the pizza. One prize per grade level will be awarded. Students with overdue books and book fines will need to clear their fines up to participate. Deadline to sign up is January 28 and dates must be rated on-line by February 11, 2013.

The Fault in Our Stars

Sometimes, you read a book and it fills you with this weird evangelical zeal, and you become convinced that the shattered world will never be put back together unless and until all living humans read the book. And then there are books like An Imperial Affliction, which you can’t tell people about, books so special and rare and yours that advertising your affection feels like a betrayal. from The Fault in Our Stars by John Green.

Library Flip

Starting in January the library will begin the flip. No, not a physical overall (although we would never turn down new furnishings!) We will be changing out fiction shelving to be genre-based. Most students are looking for a category of book – sports, horror, mystery, romance, etc – and they usually don’t have time to do a catalog search in the minutes they have in the library. Shelving genres together and using color-codes to identify them just makes sense. We will be open for business as usual during the flip but you will see lots of activity and lots of student helpers hard at work making the library even more student-centered.

On Wednesday November 21, some Central Middle School students got “time off” for good behavior. To recognize their good character and reward them for demonstrating the 3Rs, staff hosted an ice cream social celebration.

Student e-mail & Computer Accounts

All students in grades 6-12 will have school e-mail accounts in our closed district network, allowing them to communciate and collaborate electronically with their peers within our school and our district.
