There are several opportunities for 7th and 8th-grade students to participate in sports. Middle School seasons run approximately six-eight weeks. It is a requirement for student-athletes to have the following forms on file: Current Physical, Heads Up Concussion Form, and Student-Athlete and Parent Athletic Contract. Students are unable to participate until all forms are completed, signed by the student and parent (guardian), and on file in the athletic office. Physicals are good for 12 months plus a 1-month grace period (13 total months) to allow time to get a renewal based on insurance rules of one physical every 12 months. There are sites where free physicals are offered. That information will be shared out when dates become available. The Heads Up Concussion and Student-Athlete and Parent Athletic contract must be renewed each school year (after July 1) and do not follow the physical dates.
Fall activities include Girls’ and Boys’ Cross Country, Football, and Volleyball. The fall season begins when school starts and concludes approximately mid-October. Soccer has been added and overlaps a bit with Fall and Winter I activities. It is an abbreviated season running approximately 4 weeks.
Winter I activities include Girls’ Basketball and Boys’ Wrestling. Winter I season begins in late October and concludes before Winter Break.
Winter II activities include Boys’ Basketball and Girls’ Wrestling. Winter II season begins the day school resumes after Winter Break and concludes approximately mid-February. Girls’ Wrestling is in its infancy and we are trying to get our female athletes the best experience possible – as a result, more information is to come. Swimming has also been added. Swimming begins after the high school season ends and overlaps a bit with Winter II and Spring activities.
Spring activities include Girls’ and Boys’ Track/Field. The spring season begins the day school resumes after Spring Break and concludes approximately mid-May.
There is morning practice for 7th-grade indoor sports. This includes volleyball, girls’ and boys’ basketball. Students must provide their transportation to Hoover for morning practice. Carpooling is encouraged. Practice begins promptly at 6:00 am and ends at approximately 7:20 am. Athletes are to enter through Door 20 at approximately 5:50 am which allows time to get their shoes changed before practice begins. Door 20 is not allowed to be propped open for safety reasons and will be closed (locked) at 6:00 am when practice begins. School begins promptly at 7:45 am and no passes are given to student-athletes as they have approximately 25 minutes to get ready for the school day once practice is done. There are no working showers; however, students can bring supplies from home to sponge off after practice as they get ready for school. Please remember to pack school-appropriate clothes to wear after practice.
All other practices are after school. Athletes must report to their practice site immediately after school. Student-athletes are not to go outside before practice. Practices are Monday-Friday 2:45-4:45 pm. All athletes in season are eligible to ride the Activity Bus after practice, departing at approximately 5:00 pm. If parents/guardians are picking up their child, they must be picked up before the Activity Buses depart at 5:00 pm. There is no transportation provided after games/meets. Parents/Guardians must pick up student-athletes (or students may walk home) at Hoover immediately following games/meets. All student-athletes must leave campus immediately following practice/games/meets. Please be respectful of our coaches’ time as they have families to get home to after practices/games/meets.
Coaches will review expectations and provide more details during the initial practices. Each coach will also hold an informational meeting for parents during the first or second week of practice. Please feel free to contact the Hoover office with questions. 319.433.2830 or [email protected]
