Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Iowa have been serving children since 1963. Mentoring history dates back to 1991 or 1992 with Central & John Deere Product Engineering Center . In 2000, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Iowa was offered a grant by their national office to build a school based mentoring program. As a result of the grant the Waterloo Community Schools and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Iowa combined their efforts and started the Big Brothers Big Sisters In Schools/Waterloo Community Schools school based mentoring program.
Currently, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Iowa recruits, screens, trains and supports each mentor and their match at Edison, Kittrell, Lincoln, Hoover & Central. Recruitment in the community plays an important role.
We believe in the importance of retaining our mentors and supporting the matches. The longer the match the greater the change in the student and the greater success for each involved.
Big Brothers Big Sisters mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of children and youth primarily through a professionally supported one to one relationship with a caring adult, and to assist them in achieving their highest potential as they grow to become responsible men and women by providing committed volunteers, national leadership, and standards of excellence.
If you would like to become a mentor at Becker, Kittrell, Lincoln, Central or Hoover, or would like more information please go to www.iowabigs.org or call (319) 235-9397.
