Welcome

Dear Parents:

I am delighted to welcome you to the 2011-2012 school year.  I look forward to working with parents, business leaders, the Board, and our 1400 employees as we focus on our mission:

The Waterloo Schools community commits to a comprehensive system of education and support to assure that each and every student will graduate prepared for college, career, and citizenship as evidenced by continuing education, pursuing a career path and contributing to a community.

Exciting initiatives underway in our district include:

  • Career Interest Academies in our high schools—helping students see the real-world relevance of highly rigorous lessons in smaller learning communities.
  • Intensive in-school and after-school instruction and learning support for elementary and middle school students who need it.
  • Year 3 of our strategic plan, which you can track here.
  • Positive behavior support programs in all schools.
  • A performance-based diploma program at East High, West High, and Expo Alternative Learning Center.
  • Continued comprehensive professional development programs for staff.
  • Cutting edge technology and teaching methods for students and staff.
  • Continued construction of Fred BEcker Elementary, combining Black Hawk and Edison Elementary students.
  • Beginning construction of the new Orange Elementary.
  • A new dress code in effect for all students and staff.
  • A new Education Foundation to support the district’s mission.
  • Steven Covey’s “Leader in Me” program beginning at selected elementary schools.

All of us in the Waterloo Community School District are here to serve you and your children—our future.  We take that job very seriously! We know that our graduates will play a major role in determining the future success of our communities and our great land.

Sincerely yours,
Dr. Gary W. Norris, Superintendent
